Working out your own salvation, as Paul intends it in Philippians 2:12, is one of the most important ideas in the Bible. It means to keep working on a plan. It means producing a desired result. This is an ongoing, self-directed effort focused on appreciating your own situation. The faithful Christian works continually on solving the equation of Christ likeness until it’s fully realized at death. No one self-sanctifies any more than one self-glorifies. Instead you become better at resisting diseases of the soul. Wonderfully, unlike the physical body, your inner person grows stronger and you can die in peak spiritual health (2 Cor 4:16–17).
