Of all the sins Paul could have mentioned in Philippians 2:14 that ruin your testimony for the Lord, he chooses grumbling and disputing. Unwise Christians think grumbling is an acceptable sin because it indicates discernment. They consider complaining the natural response to their lucid discoveries. They reorient the world so that pulling you down into sin feels like pulling you up into enlightenment. For others grumbling is a way of life because they are incapable of starting edifying conversations. Negativity promotes creativity, but edification is a mystery. Asking them to say something positive is like asking them to speak in tongues.
