Jesus was putting it all on the line when he attacked the religious leaders of day. In fact, it is the primary way he introduced the sword into many households as predicted in Matthew 10:34. When Jesus made that statement he was borrowing from the themes of Micah 7:6, and showing how difficult it is for religious people to find him when hypocrisy and self-righteousness seem much more rewarding. Households are divided when loyalties shift. Calling Pharisees to repentance would be like meeting with Cardinals at the Vatican and calling them to repentance.
