Happy 2013! Waking up this morning a little tired but with my memory intact of the night before, reminded me of the grace of God. He protects believers from themselves. This time of year some people make resolutions in anticipation of how life will improve in the next twelve months. Permit me to suggest that the problem with this is the focuses on problems. The individual determines by an act of the will to overcome the lack of willpower that got him into his current state. That requires using the same man to create a new man. This is grand self-deception. Here’s an alternative approach. Find a person who bears fruit in an area of life where you lack self-control and follow their example. This way you live vicariously through the spiritual person and imitate their behavior. You do what they do in order to look like them, speak like them, know what they know, respond the way they respond, etc. The Holy Spirit sanctifies, but mentors offer visible mileage markers. This has a greater likelihood of success, and is biblical too (1 Corinthians 11:1, 4:16, Philippians 3:17; 1 Thessalonians 1:6). Resolved to find a mentor. I will outline how in a post later this week.
